Free PE Power diagnostic test

A free, timed set of 20 questions of original PE Power practice questions, 2 hours on the clock, drawn from the exam's knowledge areas in proportion to their weight. When you submit, you see your score by area, your strongest area and the one to work on, and the full worked solution to every question. All it needs is a Google sign-in: no card, no trial.

It is practice, not a prediction of your exam result: NCEES does not publish a fixed passing score. PhasorPrep is not affiliated with NCEES.

A diagnostic question in the exam runner: question 1 of 20, the countdown, the flag and navigator buttons, and four answer choices
A diagnostic question. The bar shows your place, the server clock, Flag and the question navigator.

What is in it

  • 20 questions, 2 hours. That is 6 minutes a question, the pace of the real exam (exam facts).
  • Spread by exam weight. Areas with more questions on the exam get more questions here. Electrical Safety questions are not published yet, so questions come from the other eight knowledge areas. The real exam has 10–15 Electrical Safety questions; study them from the codes.
  • Multiple choice. Every diagnostic question has four options and one correct answer.
  • Free sample questions. The diagnostic uses the same pool as the free sample questions, so if you plan to take it, take it before you work through the samples.

How it works

  1. Sign in with Google and press Start. The timer starts then, not before.
  2. Work the questions one at a time, as in the computer-based exam: previous and next, flag a question for review, and open the navigator to jump to any question or see only the flagged or unanswered ones. Keyboard shortcuts are listed under ?.
  3. The clock runs on our server: closing the tab does not pause it. Your answers and flags save as you go, so you can come back and finish while time is left.
  4. Submit when you are done; the confirmation lists what you flagged or left blank. If time runs out, the diagnostic is submitted with the answers you saved.

What you get when you submit

  • Your score, your strongest area and the area to work on.
  • Correct answers by knowledge area, as a chart and a table.
  • A study plan that ranks the areas by how many questions they carry on the exam and how many you missed, with a share of your study time for each. Add your exam date and hours a week for a week-by-week schedule (saved in your browser only).
  • The full worked solution to all 20 questions, with your answer and the key.
  • A result card you can share: your score band and strongest areas, never your exact score, your answers or your name.

After the diagnostic

Start with the area that cost you the most points. The 16-week study plan uses the diagnostic in week 1, and each study guide covers one area, with a short video lesson. When you want full-length timed practice, the practice exam runs the same way at half or full length, and is part of the PE Power Pass.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PE Power diagnostic really free?
Yes. You need a Google sign-in, nothing else: no card and no trial. The questions are free sample questions, so every worked solution is free too.
How long does the diagnostic take?
2 hours for 20 questions, which is 6 minutes a question: the same pace as the real exam. The clock starts when you press Start and cannot be paused.
Can I stop and come back later?
Yes, while time is left. Your answers and flags save as you go, so you can close the tab and resume from the diagnostic page. The clock keeps running, and when it runs out the diagnostic is submitted with the answers you saved.
Does my diagnostic score tell me if I am ready for the exam?
No. 20 questions show where you stand by area, which is enough to plan your study, but not enough to forecast a result. NCEES does not publish a fixed passing score.
Can I take the diagnostic again?
Yes, once you have submitted it. It draws from the same pool each time, so a second run repeats most questions. Take it once at the start and use timed practice exams later in your study.
